People took carriage rides through Aspinwall during its Light Up the Wall Celebration on Nov. 20, 2021. Carriage rides will be offered again for the 2022 celebration on Nov. 19.

Editor’s Note: This story has been updated to correct that Jessica Rehling Vukmir is the owner of Dovecote and Nouveau Designer Consignment on Brilliant Avenue in Aspinwall.

Two Aspinwall celebrations — Shop Aspinwall and Light up the Wall — designed to ring in the holiday season are set for this month.

Shop Aspinwall

The Merchants of Aspinwall, a group of women-owned businesses collaborating to attract businesses and folks to the borough, present Shop Aspinwall. It starts with an open house from 5-7 p.m. Nov. 17. Participating merchants will have extended holiday hours on Thursdays through Dec. 22.

“Shop Aspinwall is a great event that officially kicks off the holiday shopping season and all the holiday events,” said Aspinwall Borough Manager Melissa O’Malley.

“It’s kind of our kickoff for holiday hours,” said Jessica Rehling Vukmir, owner of Dovecote and Nouveau Designer Consignment on Brilliant Avenue. “Some might have special sales, probably serve some drinks that night. We’re going to be open late Thursdays through the holidays. We’re really excited.”

Light Up the Wall

Aspinwall Chamber of Commerce and the borough have partnered once again to present Light Up the Wall. Festivities are slated for 5-7 p.m. Nov. 19 with a fireworks display to close out the night.

There will be horse-and-buggy rides, pictures with Santa, cookie decorating, ice sculptures, carolers, face painting, a magic show, balloon twisters and live music in the community’s business districts on Brilliant and Commercial avenues.

“We’ve got some things for kids, but it’s more (geared) toward the holiday,” said chamber Executive Director Giuseppe Francioni. “It makes the world a better place. It sort of opens up the holiday season.”

O’Malley said Aspinwall and the chamber have partnered to sponsor the fireworks display the past four years, and it’s one of the best collaborations.

“It’s nice to get everybody together, meet Santa, and to see the local businesses decorated for the holidays,” she said. “The kids have a great time. It’s family friendly.”
