Blawnox seeking code enforcement officer
Blawnox is seeking a part-time code enforcement officer to help with the borough’s efforts to maintain safe properties.
The job entails making sure homeowners keep up with cutting grass, keeping properties free of junk cars and shoveling snow in a timely manner.
The position is for six hours a week.
Pay is about $12 an hour.
“There are no specific areas of concern,” Manager Kathy Ulanowicz said. “We just want to make sure the residents are keeping their properties in compliance.”
The borough’s current code enforcement officer, Jeff Armstrong, is leaving the job.
Ulanowicz said job responsibilities include driving through the streets to inspect properties for violations, sending notices, writing tickets and attending court hearings.
Applicants must have a valid drivers license and their own vehicle. They do not have to be residents of the borough.
Blawnox officials in recent years have worked to bolster code enforcement efforts. In 2019, council approved a Quality of Life ordinance so the borough would have solid backing for cracking down on violations.
At that time, borough employees were having problems getting violators to move quickly on fixing eyesores and safety hazards. Now, guidelines require swift action.
Violators are issued a courtesy reminder before tickets are issued. Costs start at $25 for first offenses like leaving garbage out for days or letting weeds grow too high.
Indoor furniture placed outside on lawns is also a no-no.
For issues that go uncorrected, tickets climb to $50 and then $100. People who still refuse to comply get a citation to appear at the magistrate’s office.
Anyone interested in applying for the job can contact the borough office at 412-828-4141.
