Blawnox VFC will have a fish fry from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 2 at the fire hall along Freeport Road.

More than 1,000 pieces of fish will hit the fryers at Blawnox Volunteer Fire Company’s annual Good Friday fundraiser.

The April 2 event will offer eat-in and takeout service in hopes of reeling in profits for the fire department.

Sandwiches, dinners and a la carte items will be served from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the fire hall, 376 Freeport Road.

“This is always a good fundraiser for us,” Chief Jeff Stephens said. “We average 300-400 people a year.”

He’s hoping this year won’t be any different, despite the covid-19 restrictions.

“Ninety-nine percent of our frontline workers have been vaccinated,” Stephens said.

The department will allow limited indoor seating so long as social distancing is followed.

There will be increased sanitation in all areas of the fire hall, which typically is crowded with people munching on French fries and haluski.

Masks will be required when ordering.

Proceeds usually top $3,000 for the one-day event. The money is used to purchase small equipment and for general operations.

Blawnox VFC has served the borough for nearly 100 years. Members responded to 373 calls in 2020.

Stephens said more than a dozen volunteers will work the fish fry, prepping menu items and working to package and serve the food, which will include $10 fish dinners with coleslaw, a side and a drink.

Hungry customers who want to order separate menu items can choose from a fish sandwich for $7; haluski, pierogies or mac and cheese for $3; French fries for $2; or coleslaw for $1.

Some local deliveries will be made upon request.

For pickup, call after 9 a.m. at 412-828-6380 or fax 412-828-1114.
