The mammoth tree at UPMC St. Margaret Hospital is dazzling with hand-made décor, thanks to students from Christ the Divine Teacher Catholic Academy in Aspinwall.
Third grade students from teacher Mira Fontana’s class and fourth graders from teacher Clare Yaksich’s class walked the few blocks from their school along Brilliant Avenue to the hospital along Delafield Road on Dec. 3 to decorate the courtyard and sing holiday carols.
The children also delivered cards for the patients.
“Many of our patients aren’t sure if they will be home for the holidays,” St. Margaret Hospital Foundation President Mary Lee Gannon said. “Patients tell us that to receive a card from a child or see the handmade ornaments on our lobby Christmas tree makes them smile and reminds them of fond holiday memories.”
The children received candy-canes, but many of them asked to give their candy cane for a patient, she said.
