Etna's pool will not open this summer
The Etna pool will remain shuttered this summer, a decision that borough leaders said was difficult but necessary in light of coronavirus-related restrictions.
Council voted not to open this year after weighing the social distancing guidelines and also taking into consideration repairs that need to be done.
“The decision was such a difficult one for our council and our community,” Manager Mary Ellen Ramage said. “All things were considered and it truly was in the best interest not to open.”
Ramage said the pool is small and capacity limitations would not have made financial sense. That, in addition to increased cleaning and sanitizing costs, made the decision clear, she said.
“It would be difficult due to our size to have to turn some people away,” Ramage said.
The Etna pool along Pine Street is a popular summer spot for children across the region. Its adjoining park offers educational and recreational programs throughout the year.
Some of those, like “Skins and Skulls” offered through Allegheny County Parks, will still happen virtually. Children can register for the June 15 online session that teaches about different animal species living nearby.
Ramage said council is working on other alternatives to keep kids busy and is open to ideas from residents.
In the meantime, the borough plans to take advantage of the time to review repairs needed at the pool.
Ramage said there is a leak in the piping system that has been hard to locate. Leaders will seek grants or other funding to repair the lines while the facility is closed, she said.
“We know how disappointing this is to you all,” Ramage said. “We value our pool facility greatly and understand what an asset it is to us and hope to use this time to make it an even better and more efficient asset that so many of you love and enjoy.”
