The Cooper-Siegel Community Library and its Sharpsburg branch offer a variety of programming for visitors of all ages.

To view a complete list of offerings, visit coopersiegel.librarycalendar.com. Events at both libraries are listed and can be viewed according to age group and location.

Registration is required for most programs as space is limited and some programs fill up quickly. In some cases, drop-ins are welcome as space permits.

Registration through the online calendar is encouraged when possible so staff members can plan accordingly. To register by phone, call the respective libraries at 412-828-9520 for Cooper-Siegel and 412-781-0783 for the Sharpsburg branch.

Regular operating hours at Cooper-Siegel Community Library, 403 Fox Chapel Road in Fox Chapel, are from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

Regular operating hours at Sharpsburg Community Library, 1212 Main St., are from 1 to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; 1 to 5 p.m. Fridays; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays; the branch is closed on Sundays. Parking is available at the library and the 13th Street Municipal Lot, which is metered. The library is accessible via Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s 91 and 1 bus routes — get off at 13th Street.

Both branches will be closed all day on Feb. 10.

Kids

• Saturday STEM, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Feb. 15

Join students from Fox Chapel Area High School’s Society of Women Engineers (SWE NEXT) for three different programs that explore various STEM concepts. Hands-on challenges will provide kids in grades 2-5 with opportunities to experiment with science, technology, engineering and math concepts. Drop-ins are welcome as space permits. Register.

• Pokemon Club (ages 6-11), 1-3 p.m. Feb. 15.

Drop in and show off your cards, trade cards or play the Pokémon card game. The trading of Pokémon cards will be monitored by a librarian or teen volunteers to make sure the trades are fair.

Adults

• Cooks and Books, 7-9 p.m. Feb. 13

Each month, we’ll read the same cookbook or choose a common ingredient or cuisine. We’ll each cook something to share and gather to eat and talk. This month we’re cooking from “Magnolia Table: Volume 3: A Collection of Recipes for Gathering” by Joanna Gaines. Register online.

• Shamrock-n-Roll, 6:30-8 p.m. March 6

You’ve heard of TEDTalks? Same kind of thing but for rock music! It’s a new way to learn/think/talk about music and so much more! It’s history, science, literature, pop culture and humor. Enjoy this Rock Talk specifically about Irish music. Great for fans of Thin Lizzy and other bands from the Emerald Isle.

Erik Selinger has more than 30 years of experience in secondary education. He’s taught chemistry, advanced placement chemistry, organic chemistry, and forensic science. He retired from the Franklin Regional School District in 2020. He’s a lifelong fan of rock music and his personal preferences tend toward heavy metal, punk, classic and indie rock, but he’s knowledgeable about most types of rock. He loves reading history, science, biographies, science fiction, fantasy and horror, and he’s lectured all around the county.

• The Power of Practicing Gratitude, 1-2:30 p.m. March 8

Join counselor Eileen Colianni as she shares the uplifting news that practicing gratitude can transform your mindset and more. Colianni is a mental health counselor and has been counseling people for almost 40 years. She has served as adjunct faculty in the psychology department at Carlow University, where she was also the founding director of Carlow’s on-campus Counseling Center.

Sharpsburg Community Library

Kids

• Read with Mishka the Therapy Dog, 4-5 p.m. Feb. 14

Dogs are the best listeners! Mishka is a certified therapy dog who is looking forward to hearing some great tales. Mishka and her person, Ms. Alejandra, will be at the library monthly on the second Friday. Registration is encouraged so we know how many kids will be reading with Mishka. Kids will take turns reading aloud to Mishka. For kids who are learning to read through expert readers. PreK friends are welcome with an accompanying grown-up.

• Bilingual Chinese Storytime (preschool through second grade), 10:30-11:30 a.m. Feb. 15

Explore the Chinese language through bilingual songs, books and playful experiences with native speakers Ms. JJ and Ms. CC. This monthly program is designed for kids in grades preschool through second grade and their caregivers.

The program meets on the third Saturday each month. Supplies provided.

Adults

•Horror Book Club, 7-8 p.m. Feb. 12

This month’s theme is Haunted Locations. We’re reading “Where the Dead Wait” by Ally Wilkes, in which a disgraced Arctic explorer returns to the site of his crew’s demise and discovers eerie occurrences.

Copies will be available at the circulation desk. Zoom is available for those who prefer to meet virtually.
