Fox Chapel Area High School students will compete in a statewide environmental competition after claiming first place at the local level.
District students won first and third places at an April 26 Allegheny County event, Envirothon, hosted at Boyce Park.
The winning team includes junior Sina Shaik and seniors Megan Hayes, Nathaniel Roe, Diana Crookston and Sofia Porter-Bacon. Faculty advisor is Greg Schubert.
Students will move on to the state Envirothon Competition on May 21-22 at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.
The event is a hands-on competition that requires months of study and teamwork. Teams test their knowledge on five subject areas that include soils/land use, wildlife, aquatic ecology, forestry and an evolving current issue.
“As time in the natural world is increasingly spent in the digital world, Envirothon is more critical than ever in providing opportunities for devoted study of the environment,” Rebecca Zeyzus, Allegheny County Conservation District’s Envirothon coordinator, said.
Qualifying teams at Pitt-Johnstown will advance to the national Envirothon at North Carolina University in Raleigh, N.C.
