The parking lot at Shady Side Academy Senior School will overflow next month with freshly picked strawberries, raw honey and old-fashioned lemonade when the Fox Chapel Farmers Market returns for the season.
In its ninth season, the market is open 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning June 12. It operates near the new McIlroy Center for Science and Innovation on the campus at 423 Fox Chapel Road.
Organizers tout the farm market as a place to shop, eat and socialize. In addition to the booths with produce, plants and other products, there will be music, games and tables to sit.
“It’s a great place to enjoy dinner or a snack while playing corn hole and listening to live music on a warm summer afternoon,” said Jen Roupe, school communication coordinator.
The market features locally sourced produce and specialty items from area vendors, including Shady Side Academy’s own farm.
Offerings include fruits and veggies, potted plants, baked goods, small-batch coffee, cheesecake, wood-fired pizza, herb-infused cleaning products and fresh mushrooms.
Vendors for this season include 412 Beads, A & L Sharpening Services LLC, Atelier Glass Studio, Barlow Bakes LLC, The Bluegrass Kitchen, Cindy’s Munchies, Curly Tailed Coffee, Cutting Root Farm & Apothecary, Earth Wheel & Fire Mobile Pizza, Hannah’s Honey, Lamb’s Ear Farm, Old Tin Roof Farm, Olive & Marlowe, Park Street Treats, Pisarcik Flower Farm, Pop Up in Pittsburgh, Santarcangelo Italian Specialties, Soul Home Sanctuary, Sturges Orchards, Tauberg Chiropractic Rehabilitation LLC, Ultra Matcha and Version Textile.
The market is managed in part by Shady Side Academy students. Managers are rising senior Molly Skvorak of Fox Chapel and rising sophomore Anker Zhao of Indiana Township.
The SSA Farm, which has garden plots on all four school campuses, sells its fresh-picked harvests. This year’s farm interns are rising seniors Ashwin Shankar of Murrysville and Parker Maivald of Fox Chapel, along with Chatham University graduate student Bethany Welch-Luttrell.
The Farmers Market and school farms are overseen by Anna Sekine.
