The popular ice rink at McCahill Park in Fox Chapel has been erected just in time for the cold temps and snow expected from three potential storms this week.

Already though, borough officials are asking people to observe the rules of the rink, particularly the “Closed” sign when posted.

“The main reason for closure is the ice surface is not completely frozen,” Manager Gary Koehler said.

When people ignore the sign and skate on mushy ice, the liner – which costs $550 — gets ruined.

The rink is installed and maintained by the borough.

The public works crew puts yellow tape across the entrance so it’s easy to notice when the rink is off-limits.

Last year, Koehler said someone ignored the signs and climbed over the fence, damaging the ice surface and causing a delay in the opening of the rink.

The liner has been damaged on several other occasions, he said.

“It ruins skating for all,” he said. “We are asking residents to help patrol the rink and notify police when usage occurs when closed.”

To report skaters using the closed rink, call the borough police at 412-963-7220.
