Grants, donations total $250,000 for Sharpsburg parks
A $125,000 state grant for Sharpsburg parks will be matched by a private donation to bring new playground equipment and safety features to two popular borough spots.
Council on Thursday night announced the state grant from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Money will be used to install rubber surfaces, buy new play units, create ADA accessibility and erect new fencing.
“We owe it to our residents to offer safe and fun areas to bring their children to play,” Councilmember Greg Domian said. “The $250,000 will ensure, most importantly, safe equipment.”
The private donation was made by a former borough resident, officials said.
Money will target improvements at Kennedy Park and the 16th Street children’s playground just off Main Street.
Manager Bill Rossey said final designs have yet to be approved.
Work is expected to begin in spring.
Rossey said slightly more than half of the money will go toward upgrades at 16th Street because of the bigger playground area. Kennedy Park will get a new fence so that the gate no longer opens onto the street but into the park.
“With residents and visitors spending more time outdoors and our parks getting extra use, it is vital to invest in our parks and play areas to make them healthier and safer spaces,” Mayor Matt Rudzki said.
