In brief: Pizza with Police, flea market and more in Aspinwall area

The Borough of Aspinwall’s Memorial Day Parade was held on May 26. Participants included local fire departments, American Legion Post 77, local scouting troops and more. A Military flyover, coordinated by the United States Air Force Lt. Col. Joe Posnik (Ret.), took place before the parade.

Pizza with police

O’Hara officials will host a Pizza with the Police event from 6-8 p.m. June 12 at O’Hara Township Community Park Shelter 2.

Admission is free. The department will have vehicles for families to explore.

Yard sale

Aspinwall will have a borough-wide yard sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 14-15. People can set up shop outside their homes and do not need to register with the borough to participate.

Flea market set

Sharpsburg’s community flea market is set for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday June through October along North Canal Street at Guyasuta Square.

Funnel Cake Fridays

Funnel Cake Fridays continue through the end of the month in Sharpsburg. Festivities are planned from 5-8 p.m. Fridays at Kennedy Park. There will be live entertainment, activities and, of course, funnel cake.

Registration closed

Indiana Township has closed its summer camp registration. Officials said they are at full capacity and had to stop taking applications May 30.

Registration began in March.

Officials said they are happy the camp is a popular summer experience and also saddened to have to close registration earlier than expected. More information about summer camp and its activities is available on the township’s website, indianatownship.com.

Fundraiser set

Fox’s Pizza Den at 1153 Old Freeport Road will have a fundraiser to benefit the Blawnox Centennial Celebration from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. June 18.

Art exhibit

“Colorful Complexity: Art by Kayte Rose” will be on display at Sharpsburg Community Library from June 16-21.

Rose’s approach involves using the flat pane of paper to create intricate three-dimensional shapes of high contrast and shadow. Over the years, Rose has experimented with more complex origami concepts and CMYK as a color base, which is then misaligned to show layering and to create more visual depth.

Workshop set

Cooper-Siegel Community Library will host a poetry workshop from 12:30-2:30 p.m. June 17 at 403 Fox Chapel Road.

This group meets every other week and focuses on nourishing and sustaining your creative practice. No writing or readying poetry experience is needed.

Bring a poem on paper no longer than one page if you’d like to workshop. Copies can be made at the library.

Blood drive

Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church will host a blood drive from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 29. Appointments are suggested but walk-ins are welcome. The event will be in the church lounge, 384 Fox Chapel Road.

Pet vaccine clinic

Animal Friends, in collaboration with Roots of Faith, will offer a Community Vaccine Clinic from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. June 13 at Kennedy Park in Sharpsburg. Rabies, DHPP, FVRCP and Lepto will be free. Microchips will be offered for $10. Flee treatments will also be offered at discounted rates. Free pet food will be offered while supplies last.

All cats must come in a secure carrier, one cat per carrier. Dogs must be on non-retractable leashes. Limit three pets per person.

Association of University People

The Association of University People invites singles 50 and over who are four-year college graduates to join them for activities and to meet new people. Activities include spring/summer picnics, monthly dinners, a book group, Scrabble, meeting up at local outdoor concerts and wineries.

Dog Days of Summer

Bring your four-legged friend for a free evening of fun and games from 6 to 8 p.m. June 17 during the Dog Days of Summer at Hartwood Acres Park.

The event will be held, weather permitting, at the off-leash dog area located off Red Loop Drive. Giveaway bags will be available with goodies for the pet owners and their furry companions.

Trail cleanup

On June 28, assistance is needed with habitat restoration in an important ecological area of Hartwood Acres.

Helpers should meet at the mansion parking lot. From 9 a.m. to noon, volunteers will use hand tools to remove invasive species. There also might be plantings of native species. Expect to engage in physical activity.

All tools, gloves and eye protection will be provided, and all ages are welcome. No experience is required, but space is limited. Participants should bring water and wear long pants and closed-toe shoes.

Fox Chapel Day

The fifth annual Fox Chapel Day is planned for noon to 4 p.m. June 14 at McCahill Park.

Activities include a petting zoo, ice sculpture demonstrations, food vendors, pony rides, a trackless train and bounce houses.

Local community organizations will have informational and activity booths.
