In brief: Christmas tree recycling, meditation and more around Fox Chapel

Indiana Township public works crew will collect Christmas trees that are set out to the curb by 7 a.m. Jan. 4.

Residents are asked to make sure all lights and decorations are removed.

Trees collected will be mulched and used in township parks.

Residents can recycle their Christmas trees at Hartwood Acres through Jan. 14.

Drop-off will be in the mansion parking lot. The Allegheny County Parks Department started its program on Dec. 26 and offers collection from 8 a.m. until dusk. All lights, decorations, tinsel and stands must be removed. Trees will be mulched and used in the county parks.

About 3,500 trees were received and recycled by the county last year.

Cooper-Siegel Community Library hosts a weekly virtual meditation program on Tuesdays. Led by the Pittsburgh Buddhist Center, classes are 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. It is designed for beginners and is secular and appropriate for all adults regardless of religious affiliations.

There is no registration required.

Children’s STEAM activities are available for grab and go on Thursdays at Cooper-Siegel Community Library in Fox Chapel.

Beginning at 4:30 p.m. Jan. 7, library staff will package everything needed to complete a STEAM project geared for students in K-5.

Themes are: Jan. 7 - tissue paper snowflakes; Jan. 14 - outdoor ice art; Jan. 21 - snow dough; Jan. 28 - rocking paper plate snowman.

Aspinwall Neighbors is compiling a team of Snow Angels who will help people in need to clear their sidewalks or driveways.

The volunteer opportunity is open to Aspinwall residents age 13 and older. Likewise, anyone who needs help can request it by emailing sarah@aspinwallneighbors.org.

Christ the Divine Teacher Catholic Academy in Aspinwall will have an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. on Jan. 30. Reservations are required to keep within social distancing guidelines. The school is along Brilliant Avenue.

Trib journalism scholarships available

Trib Total Media is now accepting applications for both the Scholarship for Diversity in Media and the Jim Borden Memorial Scholarship.

The Scholarship for Diversity in Media is open to high school seniors who are culturally, ethnically or racially diverse and are planning to study journalism, communication or English writing at a four-year college or university.

The scholarship will include financial assistance of up to $7,500 per year for four years, a guaranteed annual internship with Trib Total Media and an offer for full-time employment upon graduation.

The Jim Borden Memorial Scholarship is offered to high school or college students attending — or planning to attend — a four-year college or university to study journalism, English writing or communication. The recipient will earn up to $30,000 in scholarship money awarded in annual installments of up to $7,500, an annual internship with Trib Total Media and an offer for full-time employment upon graduation.

The deadline to apply is Jan. 31.

Women’s Board fashion show on tap

The Women’s Board of Pittsburgh will host its virtual fundraising event Jan. 28 and 29.

Proceeds will benefit the Children’s Program of the Women’s Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh and the Middle School Boys Program of The Neighborhood Academy.

The fundraiser will include a fashion show by Carabella of Oakmont and a cooking demonstration by big Burrito’s Chef Bill Fuller. There will be an auction and raffle.
