News briefs: Fire safety, fish fries, Medicare 101 and more
Sharpsburg Volunteer Fire Department is reminding residents to do their part in keeping fire hydrants cleared during winter.
Property owners should clear a 3-foot zone around the hydrant to make sure it is accessible.
They ask that residents remove any snow and ice, and if possible, clear a path from the street to the hydrant to keep firefighters safe.
Catholic school to offer fish fry
Christ the Divine Teacher Catholic Academy will have a fish fry March 26.
It will be takeout only, for lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and for dinner from 3:30 to 7 p.m.

Medicare program scheduled at library
Cooper-Siegel Community Library will host a virtual program called Medicare 101 from 6 to 7 p.m. on March 10.
Insurance agent Allison Clayton will review the parts of Medicare (A,B,C,D), Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplements, enrollment time lines and other items.

La Roche offers Instagram Live admissions event
An Instagram Live event hosted by La Roche University will offer on-the-spot admissions decisions and an inside look at campus March 11.
The live event will be at 5 p.m. and will feature a counselor-guided tour of a private residence hall room and other La Roche facilities, including the Palumbo Science Center, Kerr Fitness & Sports Center and Zappala Campus Center. Users also will hear from current students and have the opportunity to ask questions.
Students are encouraged to submit an application prior to the event with related documents.

Meditation sessions on tap
The Pittsburgh Buddhist Center will offer weekly online meditation sessions from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays.
The series is designed for beginners. The guide is a Buddhist monk, and the techniques taught are secular and appropriate for adults regardless of beliefs or religious affiliations. There is no registration required.

Book Club discussions scheduled
Cooper-Siegel Community Library will host the monthly book club, Booked for Lunch, from noon to 1 p.m. on March 12.
Discussion will be about four picture books: “Sulwe” by Lupita Nyong’o and Vashti Harrison, “Fry Bread” by Kevin Maillard and Juana Martinez-Neal, “Drawn Together” by Minh Lê and illustrator Dan Santat and “The Book with No Pictures” by B. J. Novak.
Titles are available for checkout at the library’s Adult Services desk.

Improve your Microsoft skills
Residents interested in learning more about Microsoft apps and skills for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Windows 10 can visit mikeswindowstraining.com for a list of free classes offered by retiree Mike Smialek.
Classes will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon Thursdays.
Using WebEx as the online sharing platform, students need access to the internet, Windows 10, Microsoft Office 365 software or similar and a computer.
Each class comes with a step-by-step handout and the files needed to complete the online exercises together. The class schedule includes PowerPoint Basics on March 11, PowerPoint Intermediate on March 18 and Windows 10 on March 25.
