Picking a pumpkin from a makeshift patch probably has never had such far-reaching effects.
Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church (FCPC) will host a harvest sale Oct. 2 through 7 to benefit four rural villages in Haiti.
Money raised at the fall-themed event will help pay for infrastructure in small towns across the globe, with direction from Haiti H20: Hope to Opportunity. It’s a charity that FCPC members have supported for more than a decade.
Bales of hay and mums also willl be available. Sale hours will be from 3 to 7 p.m. weeknights, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Small pumpkins cost $10, medium $15 and large $20. The church is at 384 Fox Chapel Road.
The sale brought in about $2,500 last year.
“Our practice has been to consult with the local community on the needs and assets of their particular circumstances and try to support the work that the community wants to prioritize,” said Rhonda Smith, Haiti H20 executive director.
Past work has included construction of schools, composting toilets and short-term medical clinics.
Founded in 2006, Haiti H2O volunteers have been working on short-term mission teams to build relationships and sustainable efforts.
There are two part-time staff members that remain in Haiti year-round.
Emily Moore, the group’s communications director, said this is the second year for the pumpkin sale, and last year proved to be popular – the gourds sold out in three days.
“This event celebrates fall while also empowering Haitians to transform their communities,” she said. “By purchasing pumpkins, you will be making an impact in the lives of rural Haitians.”
Contactless payment will be available, Moore said, as will the option of curbside and pick-up orders.
“You can point out the pumpkin you want, and they will bring it to your car,” she said.
