Sharpsburg councilman-elect moves out of town prior to being sworn in to new seat
Sharpsburg has an vacancy on council for a man who never served.
Brian Kozera, who was elected to his first term on council in November, has moved out of town.
“I decided to run for council because my love for Sharpsburg, wanting to see a better infrastructure, economical growth and development,” Kozera told the Tribune-Review via email this month. “I pray and hope for the best for everyone on council, the residents and the new riverfront development.”
Kozera said he informed Borough Manager Bill Rossey on Dec. 23 that he was closing on a new house Dec. 29 and would not be able to take his seat.
Kozera did not specify what community he was moving to.
Rossey did not respond to multiple calls and emails seeking comment.
Council had its reorganization meeting Jan. 3. Newly elected Mayor Brittany Reno and council members Karen Pilarski-Pastor, Kayla Portis, Carrie Tongarm and Sara Ishman were sworn in to four-year terms.
Adrianne Laing was named president, and Pilarski-Pastor was named vice president.
Officials at the time said Kozera had until Jan. 13 to submit an affidavit of residency in order to keep his elected position. There was no mention of him moving out of town.
Council plans to vote on Jan. 27 vote to vacate the seat and advertise the vacancy.
It could appoint someone to fill the vacancy in February.
