A pop-up clothing sale in Sharpsburg is aimed at helping families with back-to-school shopping by offering low prices on essentials such as shoes, jeans and trendy tops.

The nonprofit Second Harvest Community Thrift Store will have an outdoor tent sale as families prepare to file back to the classroom next month. Its building is still under renovation at 624 Clay St., but the event will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 15 in the parking lot.

Clothes and shoes for children ages 5 to 18 will be for sale at slashed prices, Executive Director Bonnie DeMotte said.

“Our building isn’t ready for the public yet, but we wanted to provide affordable clothes for all students,” she said.

Plans for Second Harvest were launched in fall 2019 after a $280,000 donation to Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church, specifying help for the needy. Now, a board of directors has a $2 million plan to develop the space to include a thrift store, social hall and employment training.

Despite Fox Chapel Area School District’s back-to-school plan being not yet solidified, DeMotte said children need affordable clothes.

“We know that regardless of whether kids are physically back in a building for school or not, they are constantly growing,” she said.

New or gently used clothes or other items for the Back-to-School sale will be accepted from 4 to 8 p.m. July 29 and Aug. 5 at Fox Chapel Plaza along Freeport Road in O’Hara, and from 9 to 11 a.m. July 30 and Aug. 6 at Roots of Faith, 800 Main St., Sharpsburg.

Renovations at the Second Harvest building have resumed since the coronavirus-related restrictions were lifted and DeMotte said there is a determined momentum in fundraising to see the project through. An opening is targeted for late 2020.
