At a glance, Sharpsburg police will be able to shift their behavior to accommodate someone with autism, thanks to a new program in the borough.
Police are doling out car decals that signify when there is a person with autism inside. The cling-on stickers can also be placed in a window or on the front storm door at homes.
About 100 decals are available at the municipal office and police station along Main Street.
Chief Tom Stelitano said the easy-to-see program is a vital training tool and encourages officers to be more aware of their communication skills.
“It brings awareness to autism and alerts first responders to an interaction with a person with autism, which could be very difficult,” Stelitano said. “The stickers can alert a first responder prior to any interaction.”
The yellow decals were paid for by an anonymous donor.
Mayor Matt Rudzki said officers helped design the decals to better serve the entire community.
“The decal can be used to make first responders be aware of the approach that would most effectively and safely serve the occupants of the car or the residents of the home,” Rudzki said.
“This is one step we are taking to improve outcomes for our neighbors and making the world a more accepting place for everyone.”
