UPMC St. Margaret has made history by becoming the first UPMC hospital in western Pennsylvania to achieve a third Magnet designation.

Employees gathered together and were flooded by a balloon drop when the call came in from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), public relations manager Stephanie Stanley said.

Magnet recognition is a reflection of nursing teamwork and superior patient care.

About 9% of hospitals nationally and internationally are designated by the program.

The ANCC Magnet Recognition Program lauds groups that meet rigorous standards, Stanley said.

UPMC St. Margaret was required to meet nearly 80 requirements and complete a two-day site visit, which took place in April.

“To be recognized as a Magnet institution is an accomplishment our entire hospital can be proud of,” Mary Barkhymer, chief nursing officer, said.

Stanley said staff and executives gathered together to take a call from ANCC, confirming the third Magnet designation — the first UPMC hospital in the region to earn the achievement.

“Excitement shot through the conference room when it was announced,” she said.

Hospital President Dave Patton thanked everyone, saying they all “had a part they played in this success.”
