Campers Tamer Dandashi and Jackson Lewis, among others at Lauri Ann West Community Center, got a visit from the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Auquarium on June 14, 2019.

Campers at Lauri Ann West Community Center in O’Hara got up close and personal last week with some visitors, namely a snake and Fennec fox, from the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium.

Youngsters who attend the summer camp along Powers Run Road were treated to a wildlife lesson on June 14, and were able to touch the animals thanks to a grant from the Pittsburgh North Optimist Foundation. The group will help pay to bring weekly guests that give campers a more enriching experience, Jamie Rhoades, director of development, said.

Visitors scheduled include The Andy Warhol Museum, with a lesson on the ways in which Warhol created artwork, and, arts and technology group Assemble, for a hacking workshop with recycled elements, LEDs and circuits.

“We are so grateful to the Pittsburgh North Optimists for helping to make this special experience possible, Program Manager Jason Fate said.

“We always hear how much kids love making new friends and trying new things at Camp Lauri Ann West. Bringing in these weekly programs is going to make this summer that much more memorable for our campers.”

Registration is still open for summer camp, hosted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays for children ages five to 12. Half-days are available for toddlers.

The signature program at Lauri Ann West offers sports, tinker time, STEAM discovery and outdoor time in the sun.
