Western Pennsylvanians who don’t want to see their glass garbage end up in a landfill can bring it to a roving bin scheduled to rotate across Allegheny County’s parks.
The county teamed up with the Pennsylvania Resources Council for its 2021 Traveling Glass Recycling Bin Program.
They plan six-day stops at eight of the nine county parks — including Harrison Hills Park in early August, Boyce Park in mid-September, Deer Lakes Park in October and North Park in late November through early December.
The bin will be available starting 7 a.m. Saturday, July 17 at Hartwood Acres in the North Hills.
The program launched 13 months ago in response to growing demand for glass recycling options as more municipalities and municipal vendors stop providing the service via curbside collection.
“We have heard from residents throughout the county who are looking for an outlet to recycle glass, as their municipality no longer offers glass recycling through its curbside program,” County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said Thursday when announcing the traveling bin’s schedule for the remainder of 2021.

Since June 2020, the program has amassed 160 tons of glass at 28 sites.
A ton of natural resources is saved for every ton of glass that is recycled, the Environmental Protection Agency reports.
Here’s the rotating glass recycling bin’s schedule in 2021:
• Saturday to Thursday, July 22 — Hartwood Acres Park, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the amphitheater overflow lot on Middle Road.
• Aug. 7 to Aug. 12 — Harrison Hills Park, 7 a.m. to sundown in the Chipmunk Drive lot near the park office off Freeport Road.
• Sept. 18-21 — Boyce Park, 7 a.m. to sundown at the ski lodge parking lot.
• Oct. 2-7 — Deer Lakes Park, 7 a.m. to sundown in the second veterans shelter lot near the roundabout at Mahaffey Road.
• Oct. 23-28 — South Park, 7 a.m. to sundown in the VIP lot at Corrigan and 100 Acres drives.
• Nov. 6-11 — Round Hill Park, 7a.m. to sundown in the main parking lot near Duck Pond.
• Nov. 27-Dec. 2 — North Park, 7 a.m. to sundown in the swimming pool parking lot.
• Dec. 4-8 — White Oak Park, 7 a.m. to sundown near the Chestnut shelter and playground lot at McClintock Road.
Glass containers should be empty and rinsed with the lids and labels left on. Bags and boxes used to transport the glass must be discarded off-site.
The traveling recycling bin is sponsored by Owens-Illinois and CAP Glass, which use the glass to make new bottles, jars and other products.
PRC sponsored recycling events collected 540,000 pounds of bottles, jars and jugs for recycling in 2020.
