Halloween events in the North Allegheny area
Ghosts and goblins are coming your way with a variety of Halloween activities in the North Allegheny area this month.
North Allegheny Foundation
The annual North Allegheny Trick-or-Trot returns on Oct. 28, featuring a 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run at the Marshall Middle School and Elementary School campus at 5145 Wexford Run Road. Racers can wear costumes.
“This annual community event is a fun morning for the entire family. Funds raised from the race benefit the North Allegheny Foundation, which provides grants to NA teachers and students, awards scholarships to graduating seniors, and creates vital community connections,” said Bill Mascari, a Spanish teacher at Marshall Middle and staff liaison and the secretary for the foundation.
Registration is open via www.northallegheny.org until 8:25 a.m. on race day. Cost to participate is $30.
The fundraiser will donate three dollars from each registration to benefit the North Allegheny Health and Physical Education department, Mascari said. The donation goal is $25,000, according to the race website.
“Over 500 racers are expected to join us for a morning of running, jogging, walking, costumes, music, and, of course, candy. This year will include an expanded kids’ activities area, featuring high school students,” he said.
The 5K race kicks off at 8:30 a.m. The NA Marching Band performs at 9 a.m., followed by the start of the 1 Mile Fun Run at 9:30 a.m. And a costume parade will be held at 10 a.m.
McCandless/Northern Allegheny Heritage and Cultural Center
McCandless/Northern Allegheny Heritage Center on Aufman Lane in McCandless will host Chris Whitlatch, local author of “Notorious Pittsburgh,” on Oct. 19 at 5 and 7 p.m.
“Notorious Pittsburgh” features more than 20 stories about the city, including Pittsburgh’s first bank robbery, a famous jailbreak, as well as several stories from the city’s former red-light district and the prohibition era, according to Whitlatch’s book.
The author will have his book available for purchase.
Registration for the free event can be done through the www.townofmccandless.org, according to Joe Wall, executive director of the heritage and cultural center.
Wall replaced Abby Lucostic who resigned from the all-volunteer position in early September. Wall, who was a member of the HCC committee, was selected by his fellow board members to replace Lucostic. Dan Coyne was approved as committee as vice chair. The chair and vice chair serve until the end of the calendar year.
