Lucky bakers and their caregivers learned how to make shepherd’s pie, sourdough muffins and rainbow cupcakes on March 18 in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day at Flour Power Cooking Studio on Route 8 in Hampton.

Amy Knight, franchise owner of Flour Power Pittsburgh, provided the free cooking class as part of the Peak Moments Program offered by nonprofit Variety — the Children’s Charity, which has its Pittsburgh location in Pine..

Peak Moments is a way to promote inclusion and interaction for those ages 3 through 21, and dedicated to providing places and times for them to be together to have fun, be themselves, be accepted for who they are and feel that they belong to the Variety family, said Zach Marsh, communications director.

Flour Power was also the site of an adult fundraiser on Feb. 26 that raised $1,300 for Variety.

“Amy has emerged as a truly valued active partner of Variety. We appreciate her generosity in providing this Peak Moments event last night for families to bond together and also with other families who have received life changing adaptive equipment from our organization,” Tom Baker, Variety chief executive Officer, said.

Variety provides equipment for children with disabilities, including adaptive bikes, adaptive strollers and communication devices.

Knight is a retired Navy officer and mother of two girls, according to Patti Ferraro, manager of special events for Variety.

Seven families attended the March 18 event, where Knight received a certificate of appreciation from Variety. She recently was selected to serve on the Variety Movement Board, Baker said.

Other Peak Moments events include Variety’s annual Halloween party sponsored by Covestro in Robinson Township and the annual Labor Day Parade in Pittsburgh, where the kids get to ride their bikes in one of the nation’s largest such events.
