The McDonald’s restaurant is seen in downtown Pittsburgh in April 2017.

Huntington National Bank is slated to take over the Stanwix Street site that formerly housed Downtown Pittsburgh’s last McDonald’s.

The fast food restaurant in the spring opted not to renew its lease at the location just outside Market Square. The Golden Arches had been at the site for about 50 years.

Nick Nicholas, who owns the building, confirmed that Columbus, Ohio-based Huntington National Bank signed a lease for the site. He declined to say how much the lease was worth or how long it lasted.

Nicholas said he anticipates the bank will open its new branch by the start of 2024.

“They didn’t have any presence at that end of town,” he said. “I think they wanted to make a statement to let people know Huntington Bank’s here. I think it was a good decision on their part and hopefully it helps that end of town.”

Nicholas said the building’s location makes it a “billboard for Downtown” with lots of traffic coming by the area.

Founded 1866, Huntington National Bank operates over 1,000 branches in 11 states.

Susie Shipley, regional president of Huntington National Bank, said the bank will will soon release plans for Market Square and the Central Business District in Pittsburgh.

“This addition is a key part of Huntington’s ongoing commitment to invest in Pittsburgh and will be the seventh new branch opened in the region since 2020,” Shipley said in a statement.
