Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive via an Undercliff Volunteer Fire Company truck during last year’s Lite Up Night in Shaler. This year’s event is set for 4 to 8 p.m. Nov. 22.

Shaler plans Lite Up Night

Shaler’s annual Lite Up Night will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at Shaler North Hills Library and Shaler Area Middle School on Mt. Royal Boulevard.

There will be a parade on Mt. Royal followed by the tree lighting at 4:45 p.m.

Activities include visit and photos with Santa; firepits with s’mores; cookie decorating at 5:30 p.m. while supplies last; ice skating with skates available at no-charge; horse drawn carriage rides; photo booth; face painting; balloon artist; hair tinsel; food vendors; a magician; caricature artist; ice carver; vendor tables; dance party; and the Shaler Area School District choir.

Those attending are asked to consider parking at Kiwanis Park, where ABC Transit will be providing a shuttle to the library.

Social worker receives service award

Shaler Area High School social worker LeeAnn Guido has been selected by the University of Pittsburgh to receive the 2025 School of Social Work Service Award.

The award recognizes alumni who have provided exceptional service to the School of Social Work through teaching, training and/or volunteer service.

“This is an incredible honor and a testament to her dedication and excellence as an educator,” said JoAnne Townsend, interim principal of Shaler Area High School.

Guido said she was honored to have been nominated and selected to receive the award.

“I did not enter this field expecting any type of recognition,” she said. “For me, a career in social work is not about immediate gratification — it is about the lasting impact on a student’s life made through relationships, resilience and care. I come to work every day with a heart of service, passionate about advocating for students and creating safe, supportive spaces in which they are empowered to reach their full potential. I am also passionate about sharing my knowledge and experience with a new generation of social workers as a field learning supervisor through Pitt, preparing and empowering them to serve others as well.”

Guido and other awardees were honored at an awards ceremony Nov. 13 at the University Center.

Hygge New Year event marking 10 years

Abeille Voyante Tea Co. and Millvale Food + Energy Hub are hosting the 10th annual Hygge New Year: A Choose Your Own Adventure Wellness Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 10 throughout Millvale.

The Hygge New Year, with the tagline “New Year, Same You,” started in 2017 as a way to encourage people to embrace themselves, their wellness and the new year.

Participants are invited to wander the town of Millvale while indulging in mini wellness sessions.

People are welcome to take a class, learn something new, try something they’ve always wanted to try but didn’t want to commit to, or visit a favorite practitioner for a “tune up.”

Activities in previous years included yoga, breath work workshops, reiki, acupuncture, sound healing with meditation, tea tasting, kombucha making, facials, a knitting circle and a variety of vendors selling wares.

Details about the 2026 event will be shared online as they become available.

Route 8 restrictions set through late November

Traffic will be restricted on Route 8 in Shaler and Etna through November, PennDOT announced Oct. 28.

Single-lane restrictions in both directions on Route 8 between Saxonburg Boulevard and Route 28 started Oct. 29 and are in place continue around the clock through late November.

Crews from Gulisek Construction will be doing concrete joint sawing and sealing.

The work is part of a $9.14 million project in Pittsburgh, Etna and Shaler that started in August 2024. It is expected to be finished later this year.

Two weekend closures of the southbound 62nd Street Bridge are still expected as part of the project. However, they have been scheduled and canceled multiple times, and a new date had not been scheduled as of Oct. 28, a PennDOT spokesman said.

Mt. Troy Road paving delayed in Reserve

Planned milling and paving of Mt. Troy Road in Reserve has been delayed until next spring, Reserve announced.

The Allegheny County Department of Public Works was going to mill and pave the road from Ivory Avenue to Gardenview Drive.

Cold weather forced a shutdown of paving projects earlier than expected, the township said.
