Open house meeting set on parks plan

As a part of McCandless’ ongoing Comprehensive Parks Master Plan process, an open house/public meeting is planned from 6 to 7:30 p.m. June 19 at the Devlin Pavilion, which is behind Town Hall.

Residents are encouraged to share their ideas and vision for the future of the town’s parks, trails and programs.

All ages are welcome, and light refreshments will be provided.

Farmers Market kicks off June 5

The annual Farmers Market at The Block Northway kicks off June 5 and runs through Sept. 25.

The market, produced in partnership with the I Made It! Market, offers a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables and homemade treats, handcrafted goods and rotating food trucks from 3 to 7 p.m. every Thursday throughout the season.

Vendors include Jodikinos Farms, Binko’s Pepper Sauce, Couldn’t BEE Better Honey, Nedalgyro, Sweet Florence Candy Co., Glencoe Gourmet, A Sweet Morsel Co., Boyd and Blair and many more.

There will be special themed events each month:

Deadline looms to return wireless survey postcards

All Franklin Park residents should have received a postcard about completing a Wireless Infrastructure Survey. The information will be used by borough officials to prepare a Wireless Telecommunications Master Plan for the community.

To access the survey online, residents can use the QR Code on the postcard or follow this link at https://forms.gle/ WDRf2SAaW4hFn2VWA.

For the survey, wireless cellphone infrastructure refers to antennas that transmit cellphone signals from elevated structures such as towers, rooftops, water tanks or utility poles.

Wireless cellphone services refer to the wireless subscription you may have with AT&T, Boost, T-Mobile, Verizon or another provider and the devices that are connected to that subscription, including but not limited to cellphones, tablets, smartwatches and computers. It does not include home internet, fiber or broadband services by another internet provider that is different from your cellphone subscription.

The deadline to return the survey is June 6.

Paper copies of the survey also are available at the municipal building, 2344 W. Ingomar Road.

The postcard also includes a link to more information about Home Rule, a form of governing that council and the mayor are researching as a possibility for the borough.

TigerThon raises nearly $35K for pediatric cancer

North Allegheny’s 2025 TigerThon raised $34,818.24 in support of pediatric cancer research and care.

The student-run fundraiser centers on a high-energy dance marathon at North Allegheny Senior High School.

All proceeds from the event benefit UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and Pennies from Heaven, supporting vital treatments and bringing hope to children and families facing cancer.

This year, the TigerThon sponsored Porter Harmon, a fourth grader at Franklin Elementary School. Porter was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia when he was 3. Now 10 and cancer-free for six years, Porter and his family continue to inspire with his strength and advocacy for childhood cancer awareness.

Golf outing to benefit scholarship fund

The 22nd annual Franklin Park Community Scholarship Golf Outing is planned for July 28 at the Cranberry Highlands Golf Course.

All proceeds from the outing will benefit the Franklin Park Borough Community Scholarship Fund.

Foursomes as well as singles, who will be paired into teams, are welcome to participate.

The format will be a four-person scramble. Team prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place. The golf package includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, a snack at the turn, a beverage cart and lunch buffet. There also will be skill prizes, prize drawings, a 50-50 raffle and a putting contest.

A foursome with a tee sign costs $810; a regular foursome is $660; individual golfer is $165; lunch and the awards ceremony are $75. The deadline to register is July 11.

The borough also is offering several advertising and golf packages, all three of which include one foursome: event sponsorship at $2,500, lunch sponsorship at $1,500 and the diamond package at $1,500. Event, lunch and tee sign sponsors also are being sought, as well as donations of prizes and gift baskets.

Fundraiser to benefit pet-owning veterans extended to July 4

Animal Friends is encouraging the community to help it reach its goal of raising $45,000 to support its Animal Friends for Veterans program.

Benefactors Robert Fragasso and Bill and Susan Follansbee have extended their Memorial Day matching gift challenge to help pet-owning veterans through July 4.

For every dollar donated, an additional 50 cents will be added, up to $15,000.

Animal Friends for Veterans, funded by the Major Ben Follansbee Memorial Fund, helps rescue pets become loyal companions to veterans facing PTSD, isolation and the transition to civilian life.

The program offers pet matchmaking services, pet food assistance, veterinary care, emergency boarding support and more for veterans in need.

‘Moana 2’ to be shown in Knob Hill Park

Marshall Township will show Disney’s “Moana 2” film June 13 at Neil McFadden Field in Knob Hill Park.

The animated movie from 2024, rated PG, will start at dusk and is sponsored by Armstrong.

Marshall residents invited to learn first aid for dogs

Marshall is offering its second session of Canine First Aid Training from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. June 16 at the township municipal building, 525 Pleasant Hill Road.

Kim Riester of Pittsburgh Animal Rescue will lead a free presentation that could save your dog’s life in an emergency.

Attendees will learn techniques on how to react in an extreme emergency such as choking, unconsciousness, strangulation, bloating, wounds, fractures and cardiac arrest. Tips on how to avoid injury to yourself also will be shared.

Handouts will be provided as well as demonstrations and references to veterinary literature.

Children are welcome to attend the class with their parents. You don’t need to register everyone in the family, just one person.

Space is limited, and registration is required.

Singles welcome to join Association of University People

The Association of University People invites singles 50 and older who are four-year college graduates to join them for activities and to meet new people. Activities include spring/summer picnics, monthly dinners, a book group, Scrabble, meeting up at wineries and local outdoor concerts.

McCandless looking to boost police force

The McCandless Police Department is seeking applicants for full-time police officers.

With recent and upcoming retirements, town officials are looking to ensure residents and businesses in the growing community are protected.

The town is patrolled 24/7 and is divided into several patrol districts, served by 12 marked patrol units. These units provide preventive patrols, respond to residents’ complaints and respond to requests for aid and traffic law enforcement. The police department also provides a number of community-oriented programs throughout the year.

Officers have 12-hour shifts, paid time off, a competitive insurance package, $1,300 uniform allowance, three-year DROP plan, and full retirement at age 50 with 25 years of service. Officers also have opportunities for career advancement in firearms instruction, K-9, detective division, defense tactics, accident reconstruction, traffic division, SRT team and community relations.

Junior councilperson sought in McCandless

McCandless officials are looking for incoming juniors and seniors who reside in the town to serve as a 2025-26 junior councilperson.

As a junior councilperson, you will attend monthly council meetings and compose a monthly written report to council advising them of issues affecting local students and providing your perspective of current local issues. In addition, you can select a focus area, work collaboratively with the town on projects, assist town staff with information gathering and social media, foster greater involvement in government by students and even collaborate with junior councilmembers from local municipalities.

Members sought for 175th anniversary committee

McCandless is looking for residents and business owners to join its 175th anniversary committee.

The town, which was chartered in 1851, is gearing up to mark the milestone in 2026.

This year, officials want to put together a committee of 10 residents to help with fundraising, advertising and implementing community events and programs leading up to the big day.

Blood donors sought

The so-called “Trauma Season,” spanning Memorial Day to Labor Day, coincides with summer activities that often lead to fewer blood donations.

The need for blood donors persists, and the American Red Cross and Vitalant are encouraging people to help.

Donations of all blood types are crucial year-round, especially type O, the most frequently transfused blood type. O-negative blood can be given to patients of any blood type, while O-positive can help most patients.

Everyone who donates blood, platelets or plasma during June to the American Red Cross will receive a $15 Amazon.com gift card and will be entered for a chance to win one of two $7,000 gift cards.

Summer festival set for Blueberry Hill Park

The community is encouraged to mark their calendars for Franklin Park’s annual Festival in the Park.

The festivities will kick off at 4 p.m. June 28 on the lower fields at Blueberry Hill Park.

The event will include inflatable fun for all ages, food trucks, activities, entertainment, a petting zoo, axe throwing and live music. A fireworks display will be held around 9:30 p.m.

Cleaning products sought to help people in need

North Hills Community Outreach currently is collecting cleaning products through June 8 to stock its pantries.

Donations can be dropped off at any of its three offices from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 9 a.m. to noon April 5 at its main office, 1975 Ferguson Road, Hampton.

Other locations are NHCO Millvale on the second floor of the Millvale Community Center, 416 Lincoln Ave., and at NHCO North Boroughs at Greenstone Methodist Church, 939 California Ave., Avalon.

Items needed include laundry detergent (under 100 ounces), disinfecting wipes, all-purpose cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, dish detergent, packs of sponges, rolls of paper towels and canvas shopping bags.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits cannot be used for cleaning products. Such items are a necessity and often pose an expense that many low-income families are unable to afford.

Each family in need receives a bag containing the above products.

Donations also can be ordered from NHCO’s Amazon wishlist or Walmart wishlist and sent directly to its office.

The organization’s next drive is themed Back to School. School supplies will be collected from June 8-Aug. 10. Last year, nearly 890 students received supplies. For a list of what is needed, visit nhco.org/sharing-project-donations.

Workshops to offer driving tips for teens

Impact Teen Drivers, in partnership with the Northern Regional Police Department and Marshall leaders, will present free workshops for teens and their parents or guardians throughout the year.

The workshops will be held from 7 to 8:15 p.m. June 10, Aug. 12 and Oct. 14 at the lower level of the Marshall Municipal Building, 525 Pleasant Hills Road.

The workshops will provide evidence-based strategies to keep teens safer on the road. Attendees will learn about Graduated Driver Licensing, tips and tricks to avoid distractions, the importance of seat belts, the risks of speeding and more.

The workshops are free thanks to funding by the NJM Insurance Group.
