Lovato resigns as Shaler manager

Shaler is looking for a new township manager following the resignation of Christopher Lovato.

A reason for Lovato’s departure was not publicly stated. Lovato declined to comment.

Lovato began as deputy township manager in September 2022 and replaced Tim Rogers as manager in January 2023. Rogers, who had been Shaler’s manager for 30 years, retired in December 2022.

At their April 8 meeting, township commissioners accepted Lovato’s resignation and approved hiring Rogers as a temporary manager consultant, effective April 1. Rogers said he is working part time, under 30 hours per week, and is being paid $100 per hour without benefits to manage township operations and help find a new manager.

Rogers, who still does some work as an attorney, said coming back felt like he never left, although he has noticed some new employees. He recently returned to the area after spending the winter in Florida.

“I’m always willing to help where I can,” Rogers said. “Having worked here for 30 years, I owed it to them to help in time of need.”

Hiring a new manager is expected to take one to two months, Rogers said.

Traffic restrictions set on Route 8 until late October

PennDOT is alerting motorists of road work that will restrict traffic through late October on Route 8 in Etna and Shaler.

Single-lane restrictions started March 31 between Saxonburg Boulevard and Route 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays and from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. weeknights, the agency said. Work on weekends will take place as needed.

At least one lane of traffic will be maintained throughout the majority of the project, according to PennDOT.

The work is part of a $9.14 million project in Pittsburgh, Etna and Shaler that started in August with inlet improvements on Route 8.

The southern area of the project is located between Baker Street and the 62nd Street Bridge and includes milling and resurfacing, retaining wall repairs and installation of a barrier to separate travel lanes from a future shared-use path.

The northern area is between the 62nd Street Bridge and Saxonburg Boulevard and includes concrete pavement restoration and preservation work on two structures carrying Route 8 over Pine Creek.

Additional work includes sign and signal upgrades, guardrail updates, drainage work, curb ramp updates, and pavement markings and delineation installation.

Three separate one-way detours of the 62nd Street Bridge are expected this year along with a weekend detour of Saxonburg Boulevard at Route 8 and a detour for the reconstruction of the ramp carrying Route 28 southbound traffic onto northbound Route 8.

The project is expected to end late this year.

Work to impact Mt. Royal Boulevard traffic

Traffic will be restricted on Mt. Royal Boulevard in Hampton and Shaler through mid-November, PennDOT announced.

There will be single-lane alternating traffic between Route 8 and Grant Avenue from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays while crews are working on base repairs, milling and paving, concrete curb and gutter installation, and drainage improvements.

Work may continue past 3 p.m. when paving begins.

A. Liberoni is the prime contractor on the $11.89 million paving project.

Free smoke alarms available to county residents
