In brief: News from North Park, McCandless Democrats and more
Making your garden grow
Join the Allegheny County Master Gardeners for a free celebration of all things gardens and gardening from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 29 at the North Park demonstration gardens at the corner of Babcock Boulevard and Ingomar Road.
The event will include kid’s activities, garlic tasting, speakers, an opportunity to get answers to all your gardening questions, garden tours and more. Gardening and community environmental groups will discuss what they do.
Check out the colorful and abundant annual beds. Get a whiff of the aromas of the herb garden. Explore containers in the sensory garden. Observe insect visitors in the pollinator gardens. Enjoy the creative whimsy of the flowerpot people in the “moon bed”. Check out the newly developed wet or “vernal pool” garden for that soggy area of your garden. There is something for gardeners of every stripe.
Penn State ice cream will be available.

Farmers Market Vouchers
The Allegheny County Department of Human Services Area Agency on Aging announced that it will again administer the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program.
The program provides a set of four vouchers for a total of $50 to help eligible older adults supplement their diets with locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables.
Vouchers will begin to be distributed July 25 by the AAA senior center network on a first come, first served basis. Those who are eligible but can’t get to a senior center may designate a proxy to pick up and redeem the vouchers. There is a limit of four proxy forms per person.
The vouchers may be used through Nov. 30 to purchase Pennsylvania-grown produce from participating vendors at farmers markets throughout Allegheny County.
Those eligible are: Allegheny County residents who are age 60 or older before Dec. 31, 2023, not living in a residential facility that provides meals and have a maximum $26,973 annual gross income for a one-person household and $36,482 for a two-person household.
The SeniorLine can be contacted at 412-350-5460 for more information, including distribution sites, proxy forms and locations of farmers markets.
