A 55-year-old man died Sunday morning at the Allegheny County Jail, Warden Trevor Wingard announced.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner identified the man as Mark Schwartz, of Hampton.

Schwartz was booked into the jail on Aug. 2 on charges of a misdemeanor charge of simple assault and a summary offense of harassment filed the day before by Hampton police.

He had been denied bail as “a danger to himself and the community,” according to court records. He was scheduled for a nonjury trial April 7 after a trial on Jan. 29 had been continued.

Correctional staff found Schwartz unresponsive in his cell shortly after 7:30 a.m., Wingard said in a statement.

Jail health care personnel performed lifesaving measures until paramedics arrived. He was declared dead shortly after 8 a.m.

The jail has notified Schwartz’s family.

The jail will conduct an internal review, and Allegheny County Police are investigating, according to Wingard’s statement.
