'Ireland' hits giant screen in 3D documentary at Carnegie Science Center
St. Patrick’s Day is still a month away, but a slice of Ireland is coming to Pittsburgh in the form of a 3D documentary about the Emerald Isle narrated by Liam Neeson.
“Ireland” makes its U.S. premiere in the Rangos Giant Cinema at the Carnegie Science Center on Friday. The film runs through July 31.
With its rich Irish heritage, Pittsburgh would seem a perfect place for the premiere of a film that explores Ireland’s cultural heritage and natural landmarks — from the giant Cliffs of Moher to the Skellig Islands where researchers are studying local puffins, which look like a cross between a penguin and a toucan.
“There is a movement in Ireland to reconnect with our heritage, to rediscover what it means to be Irish, and I am delighted to help bring the joy and diversity of all that Ireland has to offer, both the old and the new, to IMAX and giant-screen audiences worldwide,” Neeson said.
Directed by two-time Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Greg MacGillivray, the film explores Ireland’s ancient past while also examining its future.
“Ireland has long captivated the world’s imagination with its rich history and picturesque landscapes, and with this film, we hope to share with audiences all the wonder and cultural diversity that makes the island of Ireland so unique and special,” MacGillivray said. “I hope the film ignites a new appreciation for the vast, natural beauty and fascinating cultural traditions of this magical place.”
Jason Brown, Henry Buhl Jr. director of the Carnegie Science Center, said he was proud that the film is making its U.S. debut at the science center.
“Pittsburgh holds many Irish ties — from local Irish restaurants to the city’s annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration — and we are honored to premiere the movie in the U.S.”
The film is family-friendly and has a run time of 40 minutes. For more information, visit irelandmovie.com.
