Jefferson Hills homicide by vehicle suspect turns himself in
The suspect in a vehicle homicide turned himself in Friday, according to the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office.
William George Haughey surrendered shortly after 1 p.m. to deputies and was arrested.
Haughey, 42, was charged by Jefferson Hills Police earlier in the week with numerous counts — including homicide by vehicle, homicide by vehicle while DUI, involuntary manslaughter and driving under the influence in connection with an accident in March that resulted in the death of a motorcycle operator, the sheriff’s office said.
While driving a Jeep Gladiator under the influence on March 14, Haughey “unintentionally” but “recklessly or with gross negligence” caused the death of John Wobrak, who was driving a Harley Davidson motorcycle, according to the criminal complaint.
The head-on collision happened in the area of 2023 Scotia Hollow Road, which was less than a half-mile away from Haughey’s residence and just minutes after he left a bar.
He was served three vodka sodas at a bar in West Elizabeth which he drank in less than an hour, according to the criminal complaint, and the accident happened three minutes after he left the bar.
Haughey drove after drinking “a sufficient” amount of alcohol such that the actor was rendered incapable of safely driving,” the complaint said, the complaint said, with his blood alcohol measuring 0.14 percent within two hours after he drove. The legal limit for drivers in the state is 0.08 percent.
But police said Haughey failed to stay on the right side of the curved roadway and drove 55 miles per hour in a 20 mph while not wearing a seat belt, the complaint said.
There was no record of him hitting the brakes, but rather that he applied the accelerator pedal, according to the complaint.
According to police on the scene, Haughey became verbally abusive and was shouting profanities, and he was taken into custody. He was released later that night after getting his blood drawn for testing.
An arrest warrant was then issued following the receipt of the autopsy report by police on June 3.
