The new coats of paint are drying on several roller coasters at Kennywood.

Pillars at the entrance are adorned in neon yellow.

Food stands are getting new lighting.

It’s getting close to opening day — a week earlier than in recent years.

Kennywood will open Saturday, April 16, for season pass holders and to the public April 17, which is Easter Sunday.

Details of the multimillion-dollar improvement project in progress were unveiled on a media tour Wednesday.

“Opening Easter weekend had been a Kennywood tradition, but it’s been a while,” Kennywood spokesman Nick Paradise said.

Workers use lifts to add coats of black and purple paint to the Phantom’s Revenge roller coaster at Kennywood.

The enhancements are part of a two-year project in advance of the park’s 125th anniversary in 2023. Kennywood, now owned by Palace Entertainment, was founded in 1898 and named a National Historic Landmark in 1987.

More than 4,300 gallons of paint are being used to refresh the Thunderbolt, Jack Rabbit, Racer and Phantom’s Revenge roller coasters. The Thunderbolt will run two trains this season.

One of the highlights is the return of the Kangaroo ride.

“We heard a lot from guests that they really enjoyed that ride and missed it,” Paradise said. “We are glad we can bring it back for guests to enjoy for generations to come.”

The Kangaroo is expected to return May 28. “The Kangaroo really is the centerpiece of this refurbishment,” said Rob Henninger, Kennywood assistant general manager.

Kennywood and Sandcastle general manager Mark Pauls said the renovations overall will be extensive.

“From the moment guests arrive in our parking areas, they will be greeted by a completely refreshed experience.”

A large carousel horse will greet visitors. The ticketing and security screening process will be more streamlined, and the walk to and through the entrance tunnel will feel brighter. The Kandy Kaleidoscope will have floor-to-ceiling windows for a clearer view of treats and homemade fudge. The Old Mill, Kennywood’s oldest ride in operation since 1901, will get a new façade.

Restrooms are being renovated. The Gift Shop next to the Kangaroo was rebuilt. The Beer Garden is undergoing a full refurbishing.

Guests also will find self-serve drink stations and grab-and-go food locations.

Opening weekend is the debut of the “Swing Into Spring” festival every weekend through May 22. There will be live music and specialty food choices.
