The largest set of retirements in recent years at the North Allegheny School District was approved by the school board in February, opening up career opportunities for those looking to become a “Tiger.”
Altogether, 36 retirements and two resignations were listed on the Feb. 11 school board agenda, all of which were approved by the North Allegheny School Board. The total represents nearly 900 combined years of service.
“This is worth noting this creates an opportunity for those who may be interested in becoming a Tiger. This could be a great time to join us,” said Dr. Robert Gibbs, a school director who reports on the Human Resources Board.
These retirements include 28 teachers representing more than 725 years of contracted services with North Allegheny, several paraprofessionals representing 140 years and one custodial employee, head custodian James Smith, representing 25 years with the district, according to Gibbs.
While retirements occur throughout the school year, the board generally votes on end-of-year retirements at the February board meeting. It provides the administrative team time to consider the vacated positions in the district’s staffing planning for the next school year, a process which begins in late February, according to Human Resources Director Marijane Treacy.
Comparatively, there were 22 professional employees who retired last school year. This year, there is a total of 28 teacher retirements, Treacy said.
Those seeking careers with North Allegheny can look for the new job opportunities next month.
In early March, the Human Resources team will work with the administration to determine initial staffing needs for the next school year. Staffing opportunities will be posted in mid-March, she said.
“Every year is a great time to join the team, and this year is no exception. We should have a variety of positions to post and will continue to add opportunities as needs are known. Candidates looking to become NA Tigers should check the website regularly,” Treacy said.
Those retiring will be honored in a luncheon hosted by the district in May, Gibbs said.
There are openings for special education paraprofessionals, grounds crew, attendance secretary, bus drivers, mechanics and various substitute openings, including a long-term substitute position for a social worker, as of Feb. 12.
Becoming a substitute is a great way to see whether a position is a good fit for one’s schedule and skill set, Treacy said.
“We’re always looking for talented and caring individuals to join our team,” Treacy said.
Staffing opportunities are posted on the district’s careers webpage at northallegheny.org/departments/human-resources/careers.
