A man was killed Tuesday after being hit by a train on the South Side, according to Pittsburgh police.

Emergency responders were called by a CSX conductor to an area near Muriel Street just before 2:30 a.m. The conductor reported that a person spotted on the tracks was hit by a train.

Authorities said they found a man underneath a train car and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Train traffic was stopped while police investigated. The man’s identity has not been released by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner.

In 2020, 548 people who were trespassing on rail property across the country were killed by a train, according to Federal Railroad Administration statistics. Of those fatalities, 13 happened in Pennsylvania — including six in Allegheny County and one in Westmoreland.
