A man was hospitalized after being shot early Saturday in Pittsburgh’s South Side neighborhood, according to city police.

Authorities responded to Wharton Street around 2:40 a.m. for a Shotspotter alert, according to police. The man was found in a parking lot near a Giant Eagle store with multiple gunshot wounds. Police said he was taken by ambulance to a hospital in critical condition.

A description of a suspect was not available.

Police stepped up patrols on the South Side in early July when officials cited a “dangerous and untenable” situation involving crowded sidewalks, unruly pedestrians and sometimes violent tendencies. Continued violence throughout the month prompted officials to enact restrictions on traffic, parking and deliveries, closing off some side streets to motorists.

Those measures were announced Wednesday. The restrictions are in effect from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
