Pittsburgh police investigate the scene of a fatal shooting Thursday evening in the city’s Hill District neighborhood.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the teen fatally shot Thursday night in Pittsburgh’s Hill District as a 17-year-old from Beechview.

Joseph Powell died in the hospital around 10 p.m. Thursday, the medical examiner said.

The teen had been shot shortly before 9 p.m. in the 2400 block of Wylie Avenue.

The medical examiner listed gunshot wounds to the chest and extremities as the cause of death. The death was ruled a homicide.

Pittsburgh police said officers found Powell after being dispatched to Wylie Avenue around 8:50 p.m. for a 20-round ShotSpotter alert.

A second person, who police have not named, was injured in the incident.

Officers were notified that a suspect may have fled into a nearby building, and SWAT assisted in clearing the residence.

Multiple people came out of the building, including a 22-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the leg. He was taken in an ambulance to a hospital in stable condition.

Police said two people were detained for questioning. No arrests had been made by Friday afternoon.

Powell was not a student in the Pittsburgh Public Schools district, spokeswoman Ebony Pugh told TribLive.

Anyone with information about the shooting should contact Pittsburgh police at 412-323-7800.
