17-year-old dead after Hill District shooting, 2nd person injured

Pittsburgh police investigate the scene of a fatal shooting Thursday evening in the city’s Hill District neighborhood.

A 17-year-old boy died Thursday night after being shot in Pittsburgh’s Hill District neighborhood, according to police.

Responding to a 20-round ShotSpotter alert, Pittsburgh police found Joseph Powell of Beechview in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the chest and leg around 8:50 p.m. in the 2300 block of Wylie Avenue.

He was taken via ambulance to a hospital, where he died about an hour later, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office.

A second person was injured in the incident.

Officers were notified that a suspect may have fled into a nearby building, and SWAT assisted in clearing the residence.

Multiple people exited the residence, including a 22-year-old man with a minor gunshot wound to the leg. He was taken in an ambulance to a hospital in stable condition.

Two people were detained for questioning. Pittsburgh police’s violent crime unit is investigating.
