A Pittsburgh man will spend three to eight years in state prison after pleading guilty Monday to voluntary manslaughter for a shooting outside a bar in Mt. Washington.

Damian Schott, 26, of Mt. Washington, admitted to shooting and killing Edgard Fumbula, 22, outside of Satalio’s Bar just after midnight on June 11, 2020.

Schott’s defense attorney, William Difenderfer, said that there were words exchanged between Fumbula and his client in the bar throughout the night. In addition, he said Fumbula was seen by witnesses and on security video with his own gun, which he threatened to use.

“Our case was clearly going to be — Edgard came out and went for his gun,” Difenderfer said. “My client, obviously had a gun and defended himself.”

According to the prosecution, ShotSpotter alerted police that seven rounds had been fired on Bailey Avenue, and when officers arrived, they found Fumbula lying on the sidewalk unconscious with gunshot wounds to his torso.

He was pronounced dead a short time later at UPMC Mercy.

Detectives found seven .9 mm casings on the sidewalk and street, as well as an iPhone that Schott had put behind the bar to charge, according to prosecutors. A short time later, another victim from the shooting arrived at UPMC Mercy. That woman told detectives she was outside the bar smoking when she was struck in the upper left arm by a stray bullet.

After the shooting stopped, the woman told police she went to the victim to try to render aid and then drove herself to the hospital.

Surveillance video recovered from both inside and outside the bar showed a man in a distinctive floral pattern shirt, identified by both the bartender and owner as Schott, firing in Fumbula’s direction.
