Police departments reported a year-over-year increase in sworn officers in 2023 for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began and since the 2020 police killing of George Floyd spurred nationwide protests and increased scrutiny of police, according to a survey released by the Police Executive Research Forum. Pittsburgh police are investigating after officials said a man was shot after an armed robbery in the city’s East Allegheny neighborhood early Saturday morning.

The incident occurred around 12:20 a.m. Saturday, inside a fourth-floor apartment at 601 Pressley St.

The victim, whose identity officials did not disclose, was shot in the chest. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

According to public safety officials, the victim told police that two men dressed in all black knocked on the door, demanding the contents of his backpack and cash from his wife.

One suspect then shot him.

One male suspect was detained. The Violent Crime Unit is investigating.
