A man is in critical condition after being struck by a Norfolk Southern train in Pittsburgh’s South Side Sunday, according to the city public safety department.

The incident near the 12th street crossing happened just before 3 a.m.

First responders found the man with a head injury and took him to the hospital. Police are investigating.

The 130-car train was travelling northbound, according to Norfolk Southern.

Further details were not immediately available.

“While the incident remains under investigation, Norfolk Southern reminds the public that walking on or around train tracks is dangerous and also illegal trespassing,” the company said in a statement. “We ask that pedestrians stay clear of all tracks and only cross in designated areas.”

This was the second train strike in the region in a 12-hour period.

The first happened just before 5 p.m. Saturday, when a train struck and killed an unidentified person on Norfolk Southern tracks near Clark Street in Hempfield.
