Man suspected of Sheraden Park assault surrenders after SWAT standoff
A police chase of an alleged assault suspect culminated in a SWAT standoff in Pittsburgh’s Sheraden neighborhood Wednesday night, officials said.
A woman called 911 from a residence to report that she was assaulted in Sheraden Park at about 5 p.m., Pittsburgh Public Safety spokeswoman Cara Cruz said.
The woman told Allegheny County 911 dispatchers that she was able to get away and saw the man drive off in a vehicle.
The woman did not suffer serious injuries that required medical treatment, according to officials and what responding officers told Trib news partner WPXI-TV. Police did not provide further details about the alleged incident of assault.
Pittsburgh police from Zone 6 located the vehicle that matched the description of the assault suspect and pursued him in a car chase to the 2700 block of Sacramento Avenue, where the male suspect locked himself inside a home.
The man refused to come out after repeated orders and other tactics used by police.
“SWAT was called in as it was believed he may be armed in the basement of the home,” Cruz said.
“After multiple hails by police, tactical means were deployed in an effort to draw the male out of the house and surrender peacefully.”
When the suspect refused to come out, officers entered the residence and located him, Cruz said. Police said the man initially resisted arrest before he was detained by officers shortly before 7 p.m.
The suspect was taken in for questioning.
The man was then released, officials said.
Police did not identify him nor announce any pending charges as of late Wednesday.
Cruz said the investigation is ongoing.
