Man who fell at PNC Park charged with prowling at ex's house
The man who recently made a triumphant return to PNC Park after suffering serious injuries from a 21-foot fall there in April has been charged with prowling at his ex-girlfriend’s house.
Kavan Markwood, 21, of McKeesport faces a misdemeanor charge of loitering and prowling at nighttime.
Markwood’s ex-girlfriend, who has a restraining order against him, told police he was trying to get into her house by “forcefully” knocking on her front door Sunday, according to a criminal complaint.
Court records show charges in the incident were filed by mail Wednesday.
The ex-girlfriend told police Markwood had moved out of the house about four weeks earlier and had been sending her text messages about vehicles parked outside her house, suspicious another man was there, according to police.
Officers reviewed Ring doorbell footage that showed Markwood walking onto the property, “forcefully” knocking on the door and fleeing the scene, the complaint said.
Brentwood police said they found Markwood parked one street over, sitting inside his car. He ducked down, apparently trying to hide from view, the complaint said.
Officers said Markwood’s breath smelled like alcohol, according to the complaint.
Police said Markwood admitted to being at his ex-girlfriend’s house and sending her text messages.
Markwood on Thursday told TribLive the allegations were “not true at all.”
“That’s not the reason I was there,” Markwood said. “All I got to say is the devil tried to get me not once, twice, but three times this year.”
When asked to elaborate, Markwood replied, “I’m going to wait to go to court.”
Civil court records show Markwood’s ex-girlfriend obtained a temporary protection-from-abuse order against him on Sept. 26.
In her petition for the restraining order, she alleged Markwood was a drinker, verbally abusive, and had broken some of her belongings.
She also said Markwood had a gun, which a judge ordered to be taken away, and wrote that she felt unsafe. She said she blocked him on all social media channels, and he continues to contact her.
Markwood is scheduled for a Nov. 18 preliminary hearing.
Markwood tumbled to PNC Park’s right field warning track on April 30 in an incident that made national news.
He suffered a brain injury and injuries to his spine, ribs, lungs, back and neck.
In an interview with “Inside Edition,” Markwood said he got excited about a play and jumped out of his seat. When he came down, he landed awkwardly on the railing, careening off of it and falling head-first onto the field.
Before his fall, Markwood celebrated the Pirates by ripping off his shirt and pouring beer on himself. He drank two beers although he was underage, according to a criminal complaint against Markwood’s friend, Ethan Kirkwood, 21, of Liberty, who was charged with furnishing alcohol to a minor.
Kirkwood earlier this week waived his preliminary hearing.
Last month, Markwood, wearing a gold custom jersey, threw out the ceremonial first pitch at a Pirates game.
