A Maryland man died when he was thrown from his vehicle Monday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Pine, according to state police.

State police identified the man as Ashfaq Ahmed, 58, of Suitland. The crash happened around 4:20 p.m.

According to state police, Ahmed’s westbound vehicle crossed into the center and right lanes in the area of milepost 31.1.

Ahmed’s vehicle hit a car in the center lane driven by Joel D. Scheraga, 67, of Hyattsville, Md., forcing it into concrete barriers on the right side of the westbound lanes, police said. The vehicle then crossed all lanes and hit the concrete barriers on the left side of the westbound lanes, causing it to roll over multiple times before coming to rest on its roof against the concrete barriers.

State police said Ahmed was not wearing a seat belt. As his vehicle rolled over, he was thrown out the driver’s side window and suffered fatal injuries.

Scheraga and a passenger in his vehicle, identified as Beth A. Bortles, 54, of Ypsilanti, Mich., were both wearing seat belts and not hurt, police said.

The crash is under investigation, police said.
