McCandless Police cleared a scene Tuesday night near UPMC Passavant Hospital after they were unsuccessful in finding a man they say was armed with a knife or a hatchet.

Police said the man “suffers from mental health issues” and that “police are concerned for his well-being and will continue to be on the lookout,” according to a Facebook post from the McCandless Police Department that was updated throughout the evening Tuesday.

The search initially began around 7:45 p.m. in a wooded area near the hospital. At the time, residents were urged to stay inside.

The police department’s initial Facebook post indicated Passavant Hospital was on a lockdown, but UPMC Passavant Public Relations Director Lisa Lombardo said that was not the case.

“UPMC Passavant is not currently on a lockdown procedure,” she said. “The hospital is secure amidst covid-19 protocols with limited entrances staffed and with enhanced security.”

The hospital was not on a full lockdown at any point Tuesday, she said, though she noted that there was an increased security presence due to the police activity in the area.

Around 9:30 p.m., police brought in the K9 unit and a drone to assist in the search. Almost an hour later, police said they cleared the scene after being unable to find the man.

Residents were urged to remain cautious. Anyone who encounters anyone out-of-place or suspicious is asked to call 911.
