Pittsburgh Public Works Director Mike Gable is retiring.

“There comes a time when it’s time to retire and this is it,” Gable, 65, of Morningside, said. The retirement is effective Jan. 8, 2021.

Aside from a short stint as an Allegheny County employee about 10 years ago, Gable has worked in various positions for the city since 1974.

“I did not expect to be working for the city as long as I have, but I have enjoyed all the years, all the positions, and many, many people who made my work easier and influenced and mentored me along the way,” Gable said.

He started as a laborer in Highland Park and worked in several posts through the years in the city’s recreation and public works departments.

Gable has been director of public works since 2014. As director, among his responsibilities was leading the crews charged with maintaining about 1,200 miles of roads in the city.

The roads have improved over the years, Gable said. When he started, 60% of the city’s streets were rated as being in the worst condition possible. In the last six years, the city has made patching potholes and repaving streets a priority.

As far as keeping the streets clear of snow and ice: “It is what it is,” Gable said.

“In looking back, our employees have done a great job. Pothole issues are down. The city has a much more enhanced servicing program,” Gable said. “I think there’s a lot of hardworking people in the city. I love the job.”

In retirement, he plans to fish and golf more often.

Mayor Bill Peduto lauded Gable’s work ethic and dedication to the city. “I want to thank Mike for his decades of public service. We will miss him greatly,” Peduto said.
