Avets officials recently cut the ribbon on their new veterinary hospital in Monroeville.

The 19,000-square-foot emergency and specialty facility at 2674 Monroeville Blvd. is open to clients and patients all day every day.

Marketing Director Amanda Gruber said the move to the new spot, after having been at 4224 Northern Pike since 2005, was so medical staff can have more space to operate and use the latest equipment.

She said the previous location was basically built into a hill with its treatment center on the lower level.

“If they wanted to add any departments they would have had to built up, and that wouldn’t have made sense,” Gruber said. “To have the ability to have new equipment, they really needed to expand to a facility that had a bigger foot print.”

The state-of-the-art facility doubles Avets’ clinical space and offers more services.

Some of the new amenities include 16-slice computed tomography, 1.5 Tesla MRI, two separate isolation wards, double capacity in the new radioactive iodine therapy ward, four advanced surgical suites and a critical care unit.

“Our growing team is extremely proud and excited for the opportunities that our new hospital brings our community,”said Corey Korinko, Avets’ hospital director. “After navigating the challenges of the covid-19 pandemic, we look forward to not only greeting our clients inside our hospital once again but now at our brand-new facility.”

Originally founded as Allegheny Veterinary Emergency Associates in Plum in 1994, Avets has provided specialty and emergency care to Western Pennsylvania and the tri-state area for more than three decades.

The name was changed in 2005 after adding veterinary specialists to become Allegheny Veterinary Emergency Trauma & Specialty.
