Teacher Erin Zeigler leads her students back to class following a pep rally on April 14 at Divine Mercy Academy.

The Divine Mercy Academy gymnasium was alive with the sounds of cheering.

Part of it, naturally, was prompted by the Monroeville school’s cheerleaders, young and not-so-young. At other times, the folks sitting in the bleachers rooted for classmates, teachers and even Principal Nikole (with a “k”) Laubham as they participated in a number of friendly gym-type competitions.

At the heart of the April 17 pep rally was a celebration of the boys varsity basketball team, one of 42 such squads competing in the Diocese of Pittsburgh league for their age group. The Sabers made it to the championship game on March 12 at North Catholic High School, where they lost to Shadyside’s Sacred Heart School.

Nonetheless, the DMA boys were awarded a tall, shiny trophy that will immortalize them among the school’s top athletes, past, present and future.
