A child day care center building collapsed Sunday morning in Pitcairn.

Pitcairn fire chief Thomas Dick said calls of an explosion came in shortly after 9:30 a.m. at the corner of Center Avenue and Second Street.

“We didn’t detect any gas, and we’re trying to figure out what happened,” Dick said.

Fire and rescue crews from Pitcairn, Monroeville and Turtle Creek responded to the call. No flames were visible, and police cordoned off the street in front of the damaged building.

Officials said a building wall appears to have crumbled to the ground. Investigators said they don’t believe there was a fire at the unoccupied structure.

No injuries were immediately reported.

“Our priority is to determine whether it was an explosion, a fire or something else happened. Right now we’re checking the integrity of the building,” said Pitcairn police chief Scott Farally.
