Artists sought for library gallery

Friends of Monroeville Public Library seeks artists for exhibits and sales during the 2024-25 season in the library’s Elaine Biondi Gallery Space.

Artists interested in participating are invited to submit their work for consideration. On Aug. 12, they are requested to bring three samples of their work, either physical pieces or stored on a USB drive, to the gallery space between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., and then pick up their items between 2 and 3 p.m. the same day.

For those who are unable to do so personally, submissions will be accepted via email until 5 p.m. Aug. 11. Email submissions should include photographs of three pieces of artwork, the artist’s name, phone number, art medium, a brief description of the work, preferred months for a show, and months not available for a show. Submissions can be sent to monroevillegallerylreese@gmail.com.

Artists will be notified of the selection results in person starting at 2 p.m. Aug. 12 and via email during the early part of the week of Aug. 13.

Information regarding current season shows in the Gallery Space and invitations to public receptions can be found on the Friends of Monroeville Public Library Facebook page.

Divine Mercy hosts cheer camp

Divine Mercy Academy cheer camp is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. June 26-29 in the school gym, 245 Azalea Drive, Monroeville.

The camp is open to all students entering kindergarten through eighth grade to learn basic cheerleading skills while building school spirit and teamwork.

‘Hero Hotline’ vacation Bible school

Monroeville United Methodist Church, 219 Center Road, invites children ages 3 through fifth grade to a “Hero Hotline” vacation Bible school, scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon June 26-30.

Throughout the program, children will assume the role of heroes by learning to follow Jesus through captivating tales of various Bible heroes. They will engage in music, drama, storytelling, crafts, games, science experiments and snacks.

Concert series continues

Monroeville Recreation and Parks will present a summer concert series from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sundays in the Tall Trees Amphitheater at Community Park West, 2399 Tilbrook Road.

Monroeville Blue Flames reunion

Former Monroeville Blue Flames — including majorettes, percussionists and color guard members from 1975 to 1990 — reunite on July 2 from noon to 5 p.m. at Pavilion 4 in Monroeville Community Park West.

They can visit Facebook.com and search for Blue Flames to request membership to the private page dedicated to the reunion.

Summer choir camp

Hillcrest United Presbyterian Church will host a choir camp for ages 4 through 12 from 9 a.m. to noon July 10-14 at 1622 James St., Monroeville.

Choir director and vocalist Lynn DeFalco will lead the camp. A performance for family and friends is planned for Friday at noon. Participants have the option to sing at the Sunday church service following the camp.

Throughout the week, the children will have the opportunity to interact with musicians who will showcase their instruments and demonstrate how they can accompany songs. The camp will also include daily Bible lessons, games, activities and snack time.

The camp program is made possible through a grant from Pittsburgh Presbytery and the support of volunteer staff from Bethel Presbyterian Church in Monroeville. As a result, no fees are required for participation.

Church of Brethren yard sale

Monroeville Church of the Brethren, 481 Center Road, will host a community yard sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 15, with a rain date of July 22. Home-baked goods and beverages will be for sale.

The church requests a donation from people who bring their own tables. A limited number of tables are available for $5 on a first-come, first-served basis.

Memorial golf outing launched

The inaugural Peter Flaherty IV Memorial Golf Outing is scheduled for July 30 at Grand View Golf Course, 1000 Clubhouse Drive, North Braddock.

The event honors a 2018 Gateway High School graduate whose passing occurred in 2021. The outing aims to raise funds for the Peter Flaherty IV Memorial Scholarship Fund, which will provide financial support to one or more graduating seniors from Gateway in 2024.

The outing’s shotgun start is at 8 a.m., following registration that begins at 7. Golfers are asked to contribute $100 per player, and hole sponsorships are offered to interested parties.

A lunch will be provided at the Pitcairn Park Building, starting about 1:30 p.m., allowing participants to gather and further reflect on the day’s activities.

Food pantry distributions

The Garden City Food Pantry distributes food on the second Thursday of each month, with morning distribution from 9 to 11 and evening distribution from 6 to 7.

Upcoming distribution dates are July 13, Aug. 10, Sept. 14, Oct. 12, Nov. 9 and Dec. 14 at 500 Laurel Drive, Monroeville.
