Firearm intro classes

Are you a new firearm owner or want to refresh your training? Do you have children in your home and want to learn proper storage and safety? The Pitcairn-Monroeville Sportsmen’s Club will be holding upcoming firearm intro classes on:

• May 8, 8 a.m. to noon

• May 19, 6 to 10 p.m.

• June 12, 8 a.m. to noon

Classes could run over depending upon class participation, so plan accordingly.

Student news

• Michael Holmes Jr. of Monroeville was awarded Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference status in men’s swimming and diving at the 2021 Mount Union Honors Convocation.

• Lillianna Duff (University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg) and Nicole Kennedy (Pennsylvania State University) recently were initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.

• Slippery Rock University’s Dance Department hosted its BFA Senior Dance concert, “Against All Odds,” April 17 via a livestream on the department’s YouTube channel. Each concert featured different performances.

Riley Smith, a senior dance major from Monroeville, was a student choreographer.

Seeking volunteers

The Monroeville Botanical Garden Committee is looking for volunteers to help with planting and maintaining the flowerbeds in Monroeville Community Park located on Tilbrook Road.

• May: Clean up the beds, plant the annuals around the gazebo and replace any lost perennials.

• June-September: Weeding and watering.

• October: Fall cleanup, pulling annuals and cutting down plants.

Bingo returns to hose company

Pitcairn Hose Company No. 1’s Bingo is back. The Bingo is held every Saturday at the station, 100 South Center Ave.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m.; early-bird games start at 6:45; and regular games begin at 7. Jackpot is $300 and must go every week.

The kitchen also will be open. Proceeds benefit the company.

Monroeville-based company agrees to ice arena naming rights

Black Bear Sports Group, Inc. and its Pittsburgh operating partner, Ice Rink Performance Group, led by Scott Branovan, announced a new name for Center Ice Arena in Delmont. The facility now will be known as Palmer Imaging Arena.

“This sports facility is part of the fabric of the community we have been a part of for over 50 years,” Palmer Products Imaging president Jeff Miller said. “We are thrilled to associate our brand with an asset that provides such an amazing array of programming, featuring affordable family entertainment that promotes physical activity and healthy lifestyles as well as other amenities for the citizens in our area.”

Monroeville Republican Committee meeting set

The Monroeville Republican Committee will hold its monthly committee meeting in person and virtually April 29.

The in-person meeting will be at the Parkway building, GOP Victory Center Suite 1102, 339 Haymaker Road. Bring your own folding chairs.
