Living Dead Weekend

Living Dead Weekend Monroeville 1985 Edition, a huge fan gathering and convention, is coming July 2-4.

It will be like 1985 has returned with Return of the Living Dead and Day of the Dead reunions. The event will take place inside the Monroeville Mall, which was used as the filming location for George A Romero’s Dawn of the Dead.

There will be celebrity appearances, movie location tours, official merchandise collectibles, art exhibits, panels, photo ops and more.

Garden City UMC Food Pantry

Garden City UMC food pantry, 500 Laurel Drive, holds distributions from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month. Call 412-373-0391 for an appointment. Face masks are required. Upcoming distribution dates are July 8, Aug. 12, Sept. 9, Oct. 14, Nov. 11 and Dec. 9.

Student news

• Cailyn Brubaker (College of Health Sciences and Professions) and Holly Fischer (College of Health Sciences and Professions) qualified for the spring semester 2021 dean’s list at Ohio University. Students who earned 12 semester hours of credit, including at least six hours attempted for letter grades, with a minimum GPA of 3.5 achieved this distinction.

• Kevin Rowland (Environmental Engineering) and Kelsey Strawser (Health Science) made the spring 2021 dean’s list at Saint Francis University in Loretto, Pa. To achieve dean’s list status, students must have full-time status and attain a quality point average of 3.5 on 12 or more credits during a single semester, with no continuing or incomplete grades.

• Macy Perry and Hera Mukhtar earned dean’s list status for the spring 2021 semester at Wilkes University. To be named to the dean’s list, students must obtain a minimum 3.5 GPA and carry at least 12 credits.

• Lexi Jobe (Mathematics) has been named to the spring 2021 dean’s list at Marietta College. Any full-time student completing at least 15 credit hours with a GPA between 3.50 and 3.74 is recognized as a dean’s list student for that semester.

• Holly Fischer (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) and George Gardner (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) graduated from Ohio University.

• Rebecca D Dawson (Bachelor of Fine Arts-Applied Media Arts), Tara Elizabeth Gratton (Master of Education in Educational Psychology), Samantha Mauro Betters (Bachelor of Science in Psychology) and Dylan K Ritenour (Bachelor of Fine Arts-Applied Media Arts) graduated from Edinboro University.

• Marie Matarazzo earned a Doctor of Medical Science in Medical Education degree from Lincoln Memorial University (LMU).

Fellowship

• On July 4, the Hillcrest United Presbyterian Church will observe Independence Day with a colonial reenactment of an outdoor Presbyterian worship service on the Pennsylvania frontier. The 10 a.m. service will feature Dr. John Lolla preaching and psalms from the 1645 Scottish Psalter. The public is encouraged to join the congregation in the service of celebration. Plan on bringing a sack lunch picnic to share in fellowship following the service. The Church is located at 1622 James St., above the Monroeville Mall. • On July 18, Hillcrest United Presbyterian Church will be holding a “Blessing of the Pets” outdoor service. The service is open to the public and will begin at 10 a.m. on the front lawn of the Church located at 1622 James St. Please bring a lawn chair for your comfort. • The 20th anniversary of 9/11 will be commemorated by the Hillcrest United Presbyterian Church during a special service Sept. 12 remembering the sacrifices of first responders during this traumatic event in our nation’s history. The 11 a.m. community service will feature special music as a tribute to those who gave their lives during 9/11 to save the nation from terrorism. The Hillcrest United Presbyterian Church is located at 1622 James St. in Monroeville, above the Monroeville Mall.

English as a Second Language group

An English as a Second Language (ESL) Conversation Group is held at 7 p.m. the first Wednesday of each month at the Monroeville Public Library.

Participants can meet other English language learners for informal and guided conversation practice, including reviewing pronunciation, learning new vocabulary and possibly discussing short ESL readings suited to the interests and abilities of attendees.

Farmers market

The Monroeville Lions farmers market is open from 9 a.m. to noon every Saturday at Monroeville Community Park, 2399 Tilbrook Road.
