A Lunar New Year celebration is planned Jan. 25 at the Monroeville Public Library.

About 130 people are expected to take part in the event from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 4000 Gateway Campus Blvd.

The festival, also known as Chinese New Year or Spring Festival, is celebrated by billions around the world.

It’s the Year of the Rat, according to the Chinese Zodiac.

Rats were described as clever, quick thinkers; successful, but content with living a quiet and peaceful life.

“We always look to celebrate all of the different holidays and festivals that many of our patrons and people in the community do celebrate so that people can learn more about other cultures,” said Alice Rathjen, the library’s public relations contractor. “It’s been very well received. We’ve had many families come to us thanking us for doing it and showing children this culture.”

There will be an indoor dragon parade featuring a large Chinese dragon balloon in the front followed by children and families with hand drums and bells.

Participants can pass out red envelopes with chocolate coins to express good wishes and luck, and origami mice to celebrate the Year of the Rat.

No registration is required for the all-ages event.
